The British Council is incorporated by Royal Charter (registered at Companies House under no. RC000060) and registered as a charity under registration numbers 209131 (England and Wales) and SC037733 (Scotland). The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. This is achieved through its work in intercultural dialogue and creative and knowledge economy by drawing on expertise in five sectors: Arts, Education, Science, Governance and English.
The development of partnerships – at national, institutional and individual levels – is a central principle of the British Council’s work in higher education. The approach includes:
working both in the UK and overseas to promote the benefits of internationalisation in HE;
working in partnership with UK universities to support their internationalisation agendas;
delivering market information and intelligence to inform UK universities of international opportunities;
assisting countries in developing solutions appropriate to local circumstances and cultural contexts;
supporting activity at policy level, which advances the mutual understanding of global higher education challenges (for example student mobility, quality assurance and knowledge transfer).
